Tips for Boosting Vinyl Sales

by MyVinylDesigner 30. April 2009 04:16
These are things we like to do ...

1- We place pre-printed stickers on the back of every finished order so that people can easily contact us at a later date. It's like our autograph on the project, and it always goes on the backside, in the bottom, right-hand corner. It's FABULOUS for gift projects because it introduces us to a brand new group of people and goes with the gift wherever it travels over the years.

2- We also like to place little white stickers (just the simple office type) on the backing of vinyl-only orders. It directs people to our MyVinylSupplier website for application instructions. Then, while they're there, they can see other's finished ideas, color swatches, and categorized design ideas. Great for boosting sales! If they see something they like, they simply call us with their order. (We hope everyone uses the tools and resources here ... it was created to help our customers' customers see what can be done with vinyl, and there is no reference to MyVinylDesigner. It simply adds to your portfolio of tools. If you have a blog or website, embed our photos and rotating galleries --- excluding the finished photo gallery. Or, if you don't have an online presence, direct your customers to MyVinylSupplier for application instructions with a sticker or simple business card. Then have them call you with their order for pricing.)

3- We purposely hang samples of all sorts of finished projects around the store, because people like to see finished ideas. (If you just do online sales, perhaps you could ask customers to send pictures of your finished work in exchange for free vinyl. It's a great way to create a portfolio. (Be sure to watermark your photos!) Or if you sell from home, incorporate vinyl in different ways around the home.) We have vinyl on tiles, mirrors, picture frame glass, wood, walls, plexi glass, bottles, metal, and other creative substrates. It stirs the creative imagination of customers.

4- We also show the three-steps-of-vinyl-application on the wall so that customers can see what vinyl really is, and how it is applied to the wall. The first step shows how the vinyl arrives to the customer with transfer tape and backing and is taped to the wall. The second step shows the backing removed, with just the vinyl and transfer tape. (Customers can peel a little portion of transfer tape off to see how easy it works.) Then, the third step shows the vinyl on the wall, as it would looked finished. We use the analogy of a sandwich, when explaining that vinyl is like the filling tucked between two slices of bread.

5- We like to have both raw cut and finished wooden boards on-site. That way, the person who wants to do it themself can pick it up a raw board and go. Alternatively, the person who wants a finished board can quickly have the vinyl cut and project done within 20-30 minutes, or less. It's great for last minute custom gift giving!

6- When we see that we will have extra vinyl remaining at the time of a cut, we cut a duplicate design at the same time so that no vinyl is wasted. Once the extra design is weeded and transfer tape applied, it goes into a scrap bin where it is sold for half price. It doesn't take more money or time and it makes for less waste and more money. It's easy for people to go to the bin and grab $20-$40 at a time.

Saving Fonts on your Computer

by MyVinylDesigner 25. April 2009 04:00
We receive many inquiries about what fonts are used in our designs. Because fonts are the nature of our business, we do not disclose these names and appreciate our customers understanding.

If you are interested in adding new fonts to your computer for custom work, there are many true type and open face fonts that can be downloaded online. Many of these fonts are free for personal use, but many also require a business license for commercial use.

The font folder on your computer is generally found at C://Windows/Fonts, and you have the ability to add or delete these font files like any other file. However, if your font folder is not showing in the directory, it most likely is "hidden" and can be "un-hidden" by someone who understands your computer system a little more.

How are Stick Figure Families used? Prices? Sizing?

by MyVinylDesigner 23. April 2009 21:14

Stick figure families (or stick families) are a hot, trendy consumer item right now. When cut in exterior white, silver, gold, or light gray vinyl, they are absolutely adorable on car windows. They are meant to represent the members of your family and stand between 2 1/2" to 5-6" tall. They retail from $2/infant up to $5/adult. Pets run around $3-$4 each, and extra text for the family names varies from $2/name to $5/family name.

Not only can stick figures be used to represent families on vehicles, they can be used for job charts, name tags, and other things around the house. They're being used on t-shirts, scrapbooking pages, cards, and more. People love to talk about their families and stick figures are a great way to celebrate their family's uniqueness.

In our Stick Family PLUS Collection, we have included non-stick figure elements like sanddollars, sandbuckets/pails, palm trees, beach footwear, etc. that can represent family units. You can line up beach sandals to represent a family, or different sandbuckets. It's all about showing the personality of your family, and what you enjoy doing together.

What are YOU are doing with the stick figure families? What are people saying about them?

Presenting Stick Family Catalogs

by MyVinylDesigner 20. April 2009 20:48

Our catalog pages have a colored background to help prevent third-party misuse. May we suggest some options for sharing them with others:

1- When showing stick families, use a few presentation folders with sheet protectors. (We have found some great, white presentation folders with 12 attached top-loading sheet protectors at Walmart. They are slim, trim, very professional, and don't use the bulky rings that catch paper. They run around $4/folder.)

2- Print catalog pages on white cardstock for added durability in the sheet protectors. You can place two pages of cardstock in each sheet protector, for viewing on each side.

3- Take your catalog on a CD to a local print shop and have them print your copies. Or, print a master color copy from home and make colored copies as needed at a copy center.

4- If you wish to have something for customers to take home, present them with a black/white photocopy of the colored page. The background will be a bit gray, so make sure you print a bit on the lighter side. Customers will understand.

5- Consider showing only one or two catalog pages to new customers. Too many options generally overwhelm them, create more work for you, and dramatically increase the decision-making time.

6- Use the suggested order form we included in your collection. As the customer tells you about their family, jot extra notes on the paper so that you can add the elements and extras if needed later.  Charge accordingly ... our website offers some general pricing and sizing guidelines.

7- Please avoid showing our designs as black images on a white background. It may look a bit cleaner, but it "unprotects" our designs.  When our designs are dark images on a white background, they can be instantly vectorized, engraved, or cut in number of different softwares. This means that the very design we sell can be instantly replicated and used.

8- Lastly, invite customers to visit www.MyVinylSupplier.com to see all the vinyl designs you have available for them. There is no reference to us. You are welcome to use the how-to video, color swatches, and rotating galleries (excluding the finished photo gallery showing other people's work) in your own blog and website.
